Nurses who work in NYC’s public hospitals and agencies are exhausted and demanding change. We are uniting with labor, community, and political allies and are ready to do whatever it takes to win a fair contract that improves patient care, strengthens the nursing workforce, and uplifts our communities.

8,000 public sector nurses, who staff New York City’s public hospitals and mayorals agencies, are demanding that the city live up to its agreement on pay parity with the private sector to stop the bleed of nurses from public hospitals that has created a crisis of understaffing that harms NYC’s most vulnerable patients.

NYC’s 11 public hospitals make up almost 20 percent of our citywide hospital beds, operate the largest hospital-based clinic system in the city, and provide almost half of all Level I emergency trauma care and acute in-patient mental health services in our city. City healthcare workers also keep first responders like police and firefighters healthy and provide direct care to New Yorkers who receive assistance from agencies like Child Services, the Department of Social Services and other programs providing homeless services and mental health crisis services.

Nurses are essential to our city’s public health system!

We unite with NY nurses under 5 core principles

  • SAVE LIVES WITH SAFE STAFFING NOW

Our public hospitals must adhere to the safe staffing ratios we have in our contracts. That can only happen if we solve the crisis of nurse understaffing.

  • PAY PARITY AND RESPECT FOR PUBLIC SECTOR NURSES

With new raises won by private sector nurses, the pay disparity for newly graduated nurses in the public sector will be over $19,000 per year. Public hospital nurses in New York City must have pay that’s competitive with the private sector to stop the crisis of understaffing and high turnover. Pay parity is an issue of health and racial equity for New York City.

FUND OUR PUBLIC HOSPITALS

NYC has the most robust public healthcare system in the country. But that system is under threat due to the city’s inability to retain experienced nurses. Now is not the time for austerity. With a NYC budget of over $100 billion dollars and a proposed state budget of roughly $220 billion, we can find the funds to invest in our public health system.

LISTEN TO NURSES

Public health nurses in NYC have done more than anyone to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, administering 1.75 million vaccine doses and preventing hundreds of deaths and thousands of hospitalizations. We are the experts and we demand a prominent seat at the table on all health and safety matters. Nurses are the best equipped health care workers in NYC to guide pandemic safety planning.

UPLIFT OUR COMMUNITIES WITH GOOD JOBS

The NYC community has a vital role in helping create a better model of health care. NYC’s public health facilities serve mostly Black and brown and immigrant New Yorkers and are staffed by mostly Black and brown and immigrant nurses. Investing in public health means investing in nurses and the communities we serve.

Why Now

8,000 public sector nurses, who staff New York City’s public hospitals and mayoral agencies, are bargaining for a new union contract after our current contract expired on March 2. We are demanding that the city live up to its agreement on pay parity with the private sector to stop the bleed of nurses from public hospitals that has created a crisis of understaffing that harms NYC’s most vulnerable patients.

Understaffing and high turnover are caused by the enormous pay disparity between private and public sector nurses. NYC’s public hospitals are filling the vacancies by spending too much on expensive temp travel nurses. What they spend in only 3 months could fund fair, competitive pay for staff nurses all year. The city can afford to do the right thing!
